Dog-On-Diet Program Details

According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, an estimated 54% of dogs and cats in the United States are overweight or obese – that’s 93 million dogs and cats! This can be attributed to many different factors – over-feeding, lack of exercise or aging. Maybe you just adopted an adult pet that came home to you overweight! Regardless of why, there are many risks to your pet being overweight. As with humans, carrying around extra pounds can lead to heart and joint issues, type-2 diabetes, decreased quality of life and a shorter life-expectancy.*

The good news is that getting your pet to a healthy weight and fitness level doesn’t have to be a chore! We’ve come up with a special program that we hope you’ll be interested in. We’re looking to feature a group of overweight dogs in each size class (extra-small, small, medium, large, extra-large), and publish their weight loss journeys on Facebook and our blog. We’ll send each featured participant a starter kit that will include free ORGANIX Weight Management food, Good Buddy Rawhides, healthy weight loss tips from our veterinarian, and other goodies. Each week, participants will post updates on Facebook so fans can track their progress. The program will run for 3 months, and fans will vote for their favorite transformation in each size class. The winners will receive a free year of Castor & Pollux food!

To enter, please read the program requirements and fill out the questions below, and attach a recent photo of your pet and send to . Entries will be considered through 9/25/11.

As a participant of the Castor & Pollux Dog-On-Diet Program, you must agree to the following:

  • My dog is at least 1 year old.
  • I will follow the 7-10 day transition period (as described in the program details) while changing to ORGANIX Weight Management.
  • I will follow the minimum feeding requirements as prescribed on the bag, using ONLY the ORGANIX Weight Management formula as the daily food.
  • I will be available for an intro phone conversation with the Castor & Pollux team.
  • I will submit a weekly update by email and on Facebook that includes the following:
    • Photo and/or video
    • Any fun activities completed
    • Any noticeable progress (weight change, energy level, appearance)
    • I will submit a monthly blog post (written and/or video) that includes photo updates (timing of blog post deadline to be determined by Castor & Pollux team).

Mary works for Castor & Pollux Natural PetWorks, heading up the company's social media. She's grown up with pets all her life, the majority of them rescued strays. She has 3 dogs - Merlyn the Scottie, Maverick the Westie, and Monty the Lhasa Apso. She also has 4 goldfish, but they aren't nearly as loud, fun, or messy as her boys! She loves to take her dogs to the Hood River, OR and Manzanita Beach, where they can timidly test out the waters and annoy people on picnic blankets.

Love that food Organix, have my Golden Retriever on it for over one year now, best food ever.

  2. Dee Wheat says:

I do have one concern. Are any of your ingredients of Asian origin, and where is this food manufactured? All three of my dogs are rescues, and all are additionally service animals. I absolutely refuse to use any product that is not made in the US from ingredients that are souced in the US.

  3. mary says:

Hi Dee, our food is manufactured in Kansas. We do our best to source as many of our ingredients as possible from North America, but certain ingredients are not produced domestically, such as our organic quinoa, which is grown in Peru, or a portion of our vitamin and mineral mix which comes from China. Keep in mind that our food is triple tested for quality – when we receive the ingredients, after the food is made, and then again before shipping. In addition, all the ingredients that go into ORGANIX must be approved by the USDA’s National Organic Program – so that adds another layer of safety and quality control. We believe there is no safer food on the market, and that’s one reason why in a recent survey we found that 100% of our current customers would recommend us to a friend .

Is the land the grain grown on, using sustainable agricultural practices? Would you know if any Monsanto products were used during the farming process? Do your farmers use compassionate euthanizing techniques on the animals it uses to make the food? Are their employees paid a living wage and provided with affordable health care? Do you perhaps have a dossier on the animals that were raised during this farming process? I just want to make sure that my dog, Spock, isn’t participating in negative Karma.

  5. mary says:

Hi David, all the organic ingredients in our ORGANIX food are grown using sustainable practices and are certified non-gmo (which is a requirement for being certified organic). In addition, ORGANIX uses chicken from facilities which are certified humane under the Global Animal Partnership. We work with primarily small, family farms and pay a fair price for our ingredients. I’m sure Spock will love ORGANIX :)

  6. Kelly Clark says:

I have fed C&P for awhile now (couple of years)… ALL of my dogs have lost weight, which they needed to do :) Between the three Shelties on it, they lost a total of about 20 pounds! Great food. I love it and recommend it all the time.

  7. I have 4 King Charles Spaniels on the Organix food and I love it because it is mostly Organic.
I am concerned about some sources coming from China as I didn’t know that.
Is there a chance that you could find sources elsewhere as China scares me?
They have sold contaminated milk to babies and have such a disregard to animals. They will eat dogs in certain regions.
I don’t feel good about the chance that the food could be contaminated from Chinese products.
Also I would think that buying food from Countries that have better animal protection laws would be best.
Not sure if the minerals and vitamins from China have been tested on animals.
My four dogs are mostly rescues as they all came from puppy mills. I have a 9 year old, two 5 year olds and a 3 yr old.
I am a Vegan and an animal rights advocate so I do get alarmed when I hear that sources are coming from China.
I would like to see a vegan dog food that is palatable for my animals and is mostly organic.
Again I will not buy any foods from China for myself or my dogs.

Hi Elaine, we do our best to source as many ingredients as possible domestically. Unfortunately the only source for a portion of our vitamin and mineral mix is China, there is simply no other option. However, this doesn’t mean that quality and safety are compromised. We triple test our food, beginning at the ingredient level, and our food is made in the USA. The safety and nutrition of our food is absolutely our number one priority.

  9. Brenda says:

This contest is such a GREAT idea! My family dog Chandler is way overweight. He’s now 9 years old and lives with my mom. He still loves to play and run around but you can tell that the weight is holding him back! I FINALLY convinced my mom to change his food to something better, she was feeding him Beneful (horrible!) and she finally made the switch to Wellness and is now switching over to Castor & Pollux because you guys have the Healthy Weight formula! Just to give you a visual, Chandler is a 43 lb beagle!! ahh!

  10. Shelby says:

David Q – hilarious. Spock’s owner has a pretty good sense of humor. And C&P has what looks like a decent way to inform people about pet obesity and perhaps more importantly, what they can do about it.

  11. CRAIG R. MCNEES says:
