Where to Begin… You Tell Me!

I wish this was like the film “Julie and Julia” when Julie (the blogger) set out on a mission with a very specific goal and decided to write about her journey for her own sanity and for anyone else who might be interested. The story goes that she captured the hearts and minds of thousands while creating a community of those intrigued by her quest, plus those who loved to cook.

As co-founder of Castor & Pollux Pet Works, our mission has been “to enrich and expand the lives of pets and the people they love”. These few words actually took a room full of people, along with one of the collaborators from the outstanding book “Built to Last”, three days to nail down. It was absolutely critical to Brian (my husband and co-founder) and to me that we capture the true essence of what we were about as a company before even one product was created. This was to be our heart and soul. Each word had meaning; most actually have more than one meaning. That was 10 years ago. Our mission still holds true.

Writing this blog sends me on another mission… talking to you. There are many crazy stories to share (like the time when we were living in Hong Kong and we were threatened by a triad and sent a James Bond-like private investigator to photograph evidence for us using a camera hidden in a briefcase!), many heartfelt experiences that we’ve got in common with each other (like adopting a dog or cat and trying to understand their history of neglect and possible abuse to help them become part of our family), and tons of information to exchange as it relates to the care and feeding of your dog or cat.

Do let me know if there are particular topics that you’d like me to address. Otherwise, my journey with you may be somewhat random – together, we’ll meander along a path of story-telling and information exchanges that, hopefully, will provide you with some good laughs, some nods in acknowledgment of similar experiences, and some useful tips for a healthy and happy four-legged family member.

Shelley Gunton is co-founder and “Top Dog” of Castor & Pollux Pet Works. Shelley and husband Brian’s passion for bringing the best possible products to dogs and cats started with their own dog, Joey, back in 1985 when they couldn’t find any quality food for him after being transferred to Hong Kong. So began their journey into the world of pet food that eventually lead to the launching of their own line of natural and organic dog and cat products in 1999 – Castor & Pollux Pet Works.

  3. Your mission is noble. Dogs and cats are very special emissaries for the animal kingdom in my opinion.
While happy to have discovered your organic food for our dog, I am only sorry we did not know about it sooner. Nonetheless, your company now has us as big fans of your great products!

  5. Shelley,

We at are blessed to have formed a relationship with Castor & Pollux. All our rescue dog’s coats and physical wellness have blossomed by eating the C&P organix food. In addition to great food, you also hire the most wonderful people. Kate came and filmed a wonderful video of one of our events and Deb and Todd constantly ask “what can we do to help.” Deb and Todd have come out to several of our adoption days to lend a hand. At the time of adoption, we have the new owner purchase the same C&P food the dog has been eating. This has eliminated the after adoption call saying the dog is having ‘digestive’ issues because they changed it’s food (and the dogs love the food, even our pickiest eaters.)
An added plus is we love that we can support a local high quality company.

    Thank you!

    Hi Barb,

Many, many thanks for the WONDERFUL work that you do with Oregon Dog Rescue and for your organization. We are so proud to be associated with it and of the work we do together to find homes for many special four-legged best friends! Between our fabulous C&P team and your volunteers, we can all make a difference.
